Franchisee Profile: Mike Faulconer of Kansas City, MO

Mike Faulconer - HomeTeam Inspection Service

Location Opened in 2002.

Q: Before Franchising, what were you involved with?
A: “Before I got into franchising, I worked in the corporate world for 20 years. I was primarily involved with sales and marketing management. I burned out of the corporate world and wanted to go into business for myself. That’s why I decided to shop around for a new opportunity.”

Q: Why was this brand the right fit for you?
A: “First of all, I looked into franchising because I wanted and needed the support. I still find it valuable to this day every day. It’s very important to have a network of colleagues to tap into. I didn’t have experience in home inspection, but I wanted something that would be an intangible service. I was thinking of something that could be a viable business in a short amount of time. I think of myself as a small business owner and entrepreneur. It just so happens my business is home inspection. Luckily, I’m good at it!”

Q: What’s your business approach?
A: “We use a team approach on every inspection. I go to each home inspection along with a subcontractor on my team. We also pull in others as needed. I’d say typically there are three of us at each home inspection, which cuts the time of the inspection down to about half.”

Q: What have been some career milestones for you/your business?
A: “Last year, we had our best year and grew about 15%. While many businesses were down, we had a banner year. We gained more market share and continue to gain market share this year. While others were losing business and getting out of the business, we continue to grow.”

Q: What are your future goals? Development plans?
A: “My goal is to continue to gain market share in my existing territory. I may add multiple teams in the future too.”

Franchisee Profile: Brian O'Rear of Louisville, KY

How Brian O’Rear Got Started With HomeTeam…
Before getting his start with HomeTeam, Brian O’Rear spent 22 years in the United States Air Force, flying fighter jets and the stealth bomber. After retiring from the Air Force as a Colonel, Brian decided to return to Louisville to pursue his entrepreneurial dream and open his own business after looking at the option for the last 15 years of his military career. Brian explored many possible routes searching through different possible franchising concepts and even considered starting his own business. What Brian learned through his research is that by choosing a franchising concept, he could start up the company faster, get proper training and have a corporate staff with marketing ideas to help his business succeed.

What Intrigued Brian O’Rear about HomeTeam…
Brian was instantly intrigued by HomeTeam when he first saw the company name. What drew Brian to the concept specifically was the “team” aspect, as Brian had spent a majority of his life working in a team oriented atmosphere. He recognized the importance of having a professional home inspection service and realized that the market was flooded with inspectors who spent a career in construction, yet lacked in efficiency and clear specialization in home systems.

What also fascinated Brian about the concept was that he could operate his whole business out of his home, which gave him a low start-up cost, low equipment cost and the ability to begin operations in only a few months. In addition, the high profit margins that were attainable in the home inspection industry ultimately made opening HomeTeam a financial decision that Brian couldn’t resist.

Something Interesting About Brian O’Rear’s Business…
Despite opening his business in the height of the recession in one of the worst possible fields, Brian has exceeded expected revenues and number of inspections in his first year of operation. Within the first 6 months, Brian had to hire additional team members to meet the growing demand.

In addition to providing optimal service for real estate agents and home buyers, HomeTeam helps save the consumer’s time and money by providing a thorough home inspection in only 1.5 hours. Included in Brian’s regular inspections are pest control as well as mold, radon and allergen testing.

Franchisee Profile: Ray Fonos of Pittsburgh, PA

Franchisee: Ray Fonos
Location: Pittsburgh, PA

Q: What did you do before becoming a HomeTeam franchisee?
A: I spent 25 years in corporate America working in sales and service product management. I was starting to get tired of the whole corporate culture, having all the responsibility without all the power and the “more with less” mentality. When my company was bought out, I took my chance to strike out on my own.

Q: How did you learn about HomeTeam?
A: A former employee I kept in touch with owned a HomeTeam franchise and was very happy with it. He said he thoroughly enjoyed the work, and after doing some research I decided it sounded like something I would enjoy.

Q: What steps did you take to validate HomeTeam as a brand?
A: I did lots of research online into HomeTeam and its competitors, checking the Entrepreneur Franchise 500 and other resources. I ended up choosing HomeTeam because of their marketing program. None of the other brands I looked at could match the professionalism, content or quality of HomeTeam’s material.

Q: What are some career milestones for you? Is there anything unique about your business?
A: My growth has been exponential every year we’ve been open. Last year I was in the top 10 for HomeTeam franchises, and we’re set to do so again this year. Even though it’s been a tough year for the housing industry, we’ve done very well. We continue to gain market share. My strong service background enables us to deliver the highest quality service and superior customer care.

Franchisee Profile: Dwayne and Erica Moore of Lanham, MD

Name:  Dwayne & Erica Moore
Opening Date: April 1997
Brand:   HomeBiz
Location: Lanham, MD

After retiring from the U.S. Army, Dwayne Moore and wife Erica Moore settled in Lanham, Md. where they now own their own HomeBiz business. Aided by the assistance of their 31-year old son and master inspector, Patrick, and 32-year old son, Nicholas, the Lanham HomeBiz location is truly a family affair.

Q: Where are you from?
A:  I’m originally from Norfolk, Va. The U.S. Army brought me here in 1987 and I loved the area so much that my family and I decided that we were going to make this home after I retired from the Army.

Q: What was your career before franchising?
A: Before franchising, the only real job I had was the U.S. Army.

Q: How did you learn about the brand?
A: I learned about HomeTeam by calling several different franchises. I had talked to House Masters, another franchise which I was interested in, but I just couldn’t stomach some of the things they were saying.

Q: Why did you decide to open your own business?
A: I decided to open my business because I wanted to be my own boss. After being in the Army for 20 years, I was tired of clocking in and out and having everyone tell me what to do and how to do it.

Q: What was appealing to you about joining a franchise system?
A: Joining a franchise system was appealing to me because it was cost effective. For example, I was quoted approximately $2,200 for a brochure template, whereas I was able to purchase brochures for five cents apiece when with a franchise. Joining a franchise also provided a backbone and support for when things didn’t go as planned. With a franchise, you don’t have to figure it out all by yourself. You have people with the same interest, so that infrastructure was definitely appealing.

Q: With regard to your previous experience, what skills do you feel helped you in your business?
A: My management skills have definitely helped me in my business as they’ve allowed me to juggle my time and use the correct resources. Also, I believe my nursing skills have helped because I care. My passion for caring has carried over to this business because it’s important to care about people and their emotions. Most people are emotionally tied to a potential home because it’s the biggest dollar item they’ve bought. I’ve also learned how to separate my home life from my business life. It’s difficult, but necessary.

Q: Why did you choose to enter this industry?
A: I chose to enter the home inspection industry because I had a home inspected back in 1990. The gentleman didn’t respect me and he didn’t do anything I couldn’t do. I started going to school for it to gain knowledge. I wanted to know what that home inspector was supposed to do when he had inspected my home. I really started enjoying it as I went through school, so I decided it was what I wanted to do after the Army.

Q: How did you finance your business?
A: I financed my business through personal savings and with the help of family, colleagues and friends.

Q: What obstacles have you overcome to get where you are today with your business?
A: The most challenging obstacle has been the down economy and subsequent slowing business. However, networking has also been an obstacle I’ve had to overcome. I believe people should watch me work and then base their decision according to my performance, so trying to sell myself has been difficult. I don’t want to go around and tell everyone how wonderful I am. I want to show them.

Q: What makes your business different?
A: Our business is different due to our team approach and customer service. There’s no other home inspection service in the area that utilizes a team approach, so it puts us a step ahead of everyone else.  We also stay abreast of current technology and use it in the best way possible for our customers. For instance, we just obtained new software that emails our clientele base and keeps everyone in the loop. So everyone is aware of what’s going on and what’s about to happen.

Q: Are there any prominent industry trends that you are experiencing right now?
A: I’ve noticed the demographics of homebuyers shifting. Younger people, around age 23, are buying more homes that the older clients who are in their forties or older. Younger people have flooded the DC area, so more are now buying homes. People are beginning to realize that the market is at its rock bottom and that it’s the perfect time to buy a house.

Q: What are your expansion or development plans?
A: I’m patiently waiting for my business to grow to the point where I can hire multiple teams again. I would like to get back to having three teams of inspectors, but I need to wait until the market can support it.

Franchisee Profile: John Helton of Goshen, OH

Name:  Jon Helton
Brand:   HomeTeam
Location: Goshen, OH

Being in real estate since 1974, Jon Helton is no stranger to the housing industry. He continues his love for the industry alongside his two sons, Chris and Zach, in hopes of aggressively expanding company volume.

Q: How did you learn about the brand?
A: The HomeTeam Corporation is located in my hometown, so I knew the young man that owned the franchise. I tried to hire him but he wanted to sell the business so we bought him out.

Q: Why did you decide to open your own business?
A:  I decided to buy two HomeTeam businesses because I wanted my boys to always be employed. The economy is rough, but you can at least control your own destiny with your own business. I wanted to help the boys have a future.

Q: With regard to your previous experience, what skills do you feel helped you in your business?
A: I’ve been in the real estate business since 1974, so I understand what realtors look at when they need a home inspection. To a realtor, a home inspection is one step closer to closing. They don’t pay much attention and encourage their clients to find the cheapest inspector. Although a home inspection is the cheapest part of a real estate transaction, it’s definitely the most important.

Q: Why did you choose to enter this industry?
A: I chose to enter this industry because I love the real estate business. I don’t like selling houses, but I love the other phases of real estate.

Q: How did you finance your business?
A: I financed my business by putting a lot of money down and taking out a small loan.

Q: What obstacles have you overcome to get where you are today with your business?
A: I overcome negativity and the declining government every day. Although I don’t control the market, I can control market share.

Q: What makes your business different?
A: Customer service! Service is what we preach and service is what we give. Secondly, our team approach and multiple inspectors set us apart from other businesses. Lastly, all of our inspectors are certified and licensed. The state of Ohio doesn’t require inspector licensing, so we go above and beyond expectations. Our employees will always be trained and updated in all aspects of the homecare industry.

Q: Are there any prominent industry trends that you are experiencing right now?
A: The prominent industry trend is slowly making businesses rely on the higher class for income. In the old days, I made the bulk of my money from the middle class which allowed me to make bonus money from the higher class. However, the government has gotten rid of the middle class money, so I now have to rely solely on the higher end. I no longer have bonus money.

Q: What are your expansion or development plans?
A: My plan is to double my company volume in the next five years. It’s an aggressive plan, but I like being aggressive.

Winterize your house in mild or harsh climates
By: Teena Hammond

Winter is coming fast, with the days growing shorter and outdoor temps dropping. It's crunch time for preparing a house for winter to maximize energy efficiency and save on utility bills.
The typical U.S. homeowner, regardless of location, loses approximately $40 of every $100 spent on air heating and cooling to duct and air leakage alone. Every house is different, so for homeowners to get the biggest bang for their buck on improvements, it's smart to diagnose the causes of high utility bills and energy loss.
Here are winterizing tips to save energy:

HomeTeam Inspection Service was featured The Sentinel in an article titled, "Local Veteran uses military background as small business owner." Greg Haskett also discussed HomeTeam’s participation in the Vet Fran program, which gives veterans a 25% discount on the initial franchise fee, and the success that quality veterans bring to franchises. Local Veteran uses military background as small business owner

By: Chelsea Boone

“Failure is not an option,” military veteran Dwayne Moore said in reference to his home inspection business.

That work ethic became instilled in Moore while he was in the military and he kept that with him when started his business, HomeBiz Inspection Team.

Moore’s time in the military reiterated the things he learned at home, he said.

“It gave me a sense of teamwork,” the retired Army medic said.

Moore served as a nursing assistant for the Army starting in Dec. 1976 and later became a clinical administrator. He served 21 years and retired from the Army in July 1997.

Mold in your home, how serious is it?

Learning that mold is present in your home can be scary, but before you panic there are some things that you should know.

Mold (fungi) is present everywhere - indoors and outdoors. There are more than 100,000 species of mold. At least 1,000 species of mold are common in the U.S. and are found in moist or damp areas, as all molds need water to grow.

Mold is often confused with another fungus, mildew. Mildew is the black residue on your shower curtains and the funny smell coming from clothes that sat too long in the washer. Mold is the fuzzy or slimy stuff that sometimes grows on your counter fruit. It also appears as irregularly shaped spots of black or gray on a wall or ceiling, which is much harder to throw away than a rotting orange!

Just like mold on fruit, mold growing in a house gets its energy from organic matter. Like mildew, it is attracted to moisture and breeds in damp environments. Therefore, if a home has been exposed to any sort of water damage, it may have hidden mold. Common areas where mold hides include:

  • Backsides of dry wall
  • Wallpaper or paneling
  • Top side of ceiling tiles
  • Underside of carpets and carpet pads
  • Inside walls around pipes
  • Surface of walls behind furniture
  • Inside ductwork
  • Roof materials above ceiling tiles

Most types of mold that are routinely encountered are not hazardous to healthy individuals, however there are household molds that are toxic and can cause neurological problems. Common symptoms in individuals living in a house with mold are:

  • Itchy and watering eyes
  • Chronic coughing
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Rashes
  • Fatigue
  • Sinus problems
  • Nasal blockage
  • Frequent sneezing
  • Depending on the amount of exposure and a person's individual vulnerability, more serious health effects - such as fevers and breathing problems - can occur but are unusual.

Mold should be cleaned as soon as it appears. Persons cleaning mold should be free of symptoms and allergies and need to wear gloves during cleaning. Small areas of mold can be cleaned using a detergent/soapy solution or an appropriate household cleaner. Once the area is cleaned, it then needs to be thoroughly dried and any sponges or rags used need to be disposed.

If a house has a severe mold problem, more likely than not that there will be a musty scent in the affected area. Some surfaces may look smudged or blotched and should not be touched.

If you suspect that your home or potential home is contaminated with mold call a professional home inspector to inspect and test the house for mold. If the home tests positive for mold, caution should be taken. Even in the event that mold can be cleaned up, purchasing mold insurance would be a wise investment to minimize financial and personal harm that could occur if mold does not get properly cleaned up.

HomeTeam Inspection Service Named to 2011 Military Friendly Franchises® List

Showcasing its commitment toward providing job opportunities to military veterans, HomeTeam Inspection Service was recently featured in the G.I. Jobs 2011 Military Friendly Franchises® list.

Created three years ago, the list honors the top 7 percent of franchises doing the most to recruit American veterans as franchisees and comes on the heels of U.S. Census Bureau figures showing there are more than 2.4 million veteran-owned businesses across the country.

HomeTeam Inspection Service, a 175-plus unit home inspection franchise, was among six brands in the real estate category and was one of two home inspection brands to top the list.

“We feel this honor is a testament to our continued support of veterans becoming franchisees,” said Greg Haskett, vice president of shared services for HomeTeam Inspection Service. “Veterans are a driven group of people who are a good fit for the long-term success of a franchise.”

Criteria for the list include a brand’s ability to fit the veteran’s need to know what type of franchise to pursue, which gives the best financial incentives and training, and which franchises have the highest number of veterans in the franchise system. Each of the brands highlighted on the Military Friendly Franchises® list have the common bond of putting priority on the recruitment of owner-operators with military experience. Through the International Franchise Association’s VetFran program, HomeTeam Inspection Service offers a 25 percent reduction of the initial franchise fee for military veterans.

“The incentives we offer are just one way we can give back to the men and women who have fought for our country,” Haskett said. “These people are making unbelievable sacrifices every day, and this is our way of saying thanks.”

Ingrained with a strong sense of discipline, determination and motivation, the men and women who make up the U.S. Armed Forces have all the skills required to successfully operate a HomeTeam Inspection Service unit. With a low initial start-up cost that lends itself to a greater opportunity to secure lending, HomeTeam Inspection Service has experienced continued brand growth.

“We always want the right fit, but the right fit is expanded for our brand because you don’t need hundreds of thousands of dollars to get started,” Haskett said. “We believe military veterans see the low investment risk, the ability to work out of their home and the system that can be followed as reasons why they can benefit from joining the HomeTeam Inspection Service family.”

Bloc
of franchises eagerly target Hartford
By Brad Kane

Twelve franchises which share the burden of not being familiar names have banded together to push into the Greater Hartford market.

Either the franchises already have a presence in Connecticut, have excellent sales from limited locations and want to expand; or the franchises exist in far off places and are lured by the promise of higher incomes and positioning between Boston and New York.

Wind Mitigation Services Bolster Business for Home Inspectors

Ancillary services have become a critical part of the home inspection business over the last several years as a way to continue to keep revenue streams steady. In Florida, HomeTeam Inspection Service’s franchisees have recently added wind mitigation to their portfolio of services, opening an opportunity for heightened revenue.

Colin Conroy, HomeTeam franchisee in Pompano Beach, Fla., estimates that 75 percent of the homes his team inspects also include a wind mitigation inspection. Of the remaining 25 percent, he said many will call back to have a wind mitigation inspection performed after their initial inspection.

“It has increased our business substantially,” he said. “The number of inspections we’re doing is about the same as last year, but we have seen a substantial increase in the number of wind storm mitigations we’ve been asked to perform.”

Historically, wind mitigation inspections in Florida have been performed by the state-run home insurance group, which created the service when many insurers pulled out of the state due to heavy losses associated with hurricanes. Licensing for home inspectors became available in March this year, allowing home inspectors in the state to perform wind mitigation reports.

The process involves photographs, use of metal detectors and taking exact measurements — all carried out by an inspector who has credibility with insurers. Conroy estimates his revenue is up 22 percent from last year, and attributes 75 percent of that increase to adding wind mitigation inspections to his service offerings.

But the service isn’t just a way for HomeTeam franchisees to add to their offerings, and their bottom line, but is also something homeowners have a proven need for. Homeowners can have the wind mitigation inspection completed during the time of an initial inspection and now Realtors® in the area are also becoming educated about the process in order to better prepare consumers.

“Typically if you have a home that meets all or most of the standards, you’re looking at the homeowner saving $500 to $1,000 in the premiums they will pay,” Conroy said. “It’s always worth the cost of doing the inspection.”

Although wind mitigation inspections are more typical in Florida right now, many believe it won’t be long until other states follow suit. By getting into the wind mitigation service early in Florida, HomeTeam is now prepared should other states be affected by similar weather patterns and begin to offer incentives to homeowners. This will ensure that franchisees are ready to begin implementing wind mitigation checks in the future if they are needed in other parts of the country.

HomeTeam Inspection Service Implements New, Time-Saving Inspection Software

Since its inception 20 years ago, HomeTeam Inspection Service has always strived to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to its ability to provide top-of-the-line service. A big part of the HomeTeam service is being able to quickly and efficiently deal with the paperwork related to a home inspection once it is completed.

Homebuyers and REALTORS® often are waiting on this information to proceed with the next steps in their processes, and it’s important for HomeTeam to get the information back in a timely manner. With the implementation of HomeTeam Inspection Service’s new inspection software, home inspectors are now able to provide even more efficient, professional and thorough inspections. The software allows home inspectors to have the latest technology at their fingertips, greatly speeding up the process from start to finish.

The new software allows HomeTeam Inspection Service inspectors to connect with both REALTORS® and homebuyers in a seamless and professional manner. Now, inspectors have access to online scheduling, which allows for inspections to be scheduled in real time 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Another feature of the newly implemented software system is that reports that are generated after an inspection is completed can now be delivered online. This is a quicker and more efficient way for the inspector to relay the information to the homebuyer or REALTOR®. Email reminders and confirmations are sent automatically to REALTORS® and clients under the new software, ensuring that each party is aware of the date and time an inspection will take place.

Being implemented this month, the new system has already had a positive response through its testing phase among franchisees within the HomeTeam Inspection Service system, with many noting that it has dramatically enhanced their ability to provide timely results.

The system is one more example of how HomeTeam Inspection Service is committed to constantly being at the forefront of its service capabilities. By providing its inspectors with this advanced system, they will be able to provide their customers with the best service available in the home inspection market.

HomeTeam Inspection Service Adds Wind Storm Mitigation Inspection to Services

By Greg Haskett, VP of Shared Services, HomeTeam Inspection Service

Over the 20 years that HomeTeam Inspection Service has been in business, they have continued to add ancillary services like pest, mold and radon testing in order to provide consumers with a “One Call Does It All” place for inspection services. This philosophy has been key in HomeTeam’s professional reputation in the markets it serves.

Even in the down economy, HomeTeam Inspection Service keeps abreast of the trends and recently has added a service which will keep its franchisees profitable and provide value-added services to the consumer. This year, HomeTeam provided certification to all Florida-based franchisees in Wind Storm Mitigation Inspections.

In 2007, the Florida legislature passed a house bill (#7057) which requires insurance companies to give discounts to home owners who have certain mitigation features included in their home. There is a 9-point checklist which a certified home inspector must fill out in order for the home owner to qualify. Home inspectors are required to be certified in this specialized inspection in order for the home owner to receive the insurance discount, which requires the inspector to fill out a form on the mitigation features of the home and take photos for proof.

There is such a large market for this inspection as a result of the passing of the legislative bill in Florida that HomeTeam Inspection Service has trained all of its Florida-based franchisees on how to perform this inspection and will be rolling it out to other franchisees throughout the system as well as other states adopt similar bills.

HomeTeam ensures that its franchisees are equipped to professionally handle all issues related to the home inspection industry,” said Greg Haskett, VP of Shared Services. “Not only does our adding services help the consumer, it also puts money into the pockets of our franchisees.”

Local HomeTeam Inspector Appointed to TREC Inspector Advisory Committee

Texarkana owner/operator tapped for six-year term with Texas Real Estate Commission

Greg Eakin, owner and operator of HomeTeam Inspection Service in Texarkana, was recently recognized for nine years of hard work and dedication to the home inspection industry in Texas with a nomination to the Texas Real Estate Commission’s Inspector Advisory Committee. This committee draws six home inspectors from the over 3,000 registered inspectors across the state of Texas. Eakin is the second HomeTeam Inspection Service franchisee to be named to the committee, joining Curtis Carr who was appointed in 2007.

The TREC Inspector Advisory Committee provides expertise in correcting and updating the “Standards of Practice,” oversees state approved continuing education providers and classes, and enforcement for home inspectors across the state of Texas. This year, over 100 applicants applied to the prestigious position and Eakin was one of only three named to the state committee.

“I am honored and excited to be given a seat on this committee,” said Eakin. “At HomeTeam, we strive to present the most professional inspectors and provide the highest level of service to Realtors. Being appointed to the TREC is proof of how much we care about every inspection we perform.”

Establishing a successful second career after working in the manufacturing industry, Greg has served Northeast Texas and Southwest Arkansas for the last nine years and has brought a new level of customer satisfaction to the home inspection industry in the area. Greg and his team of inspectors are prepared to inspect everything in the home from pools to structural and mechanical systems. In addition, they also can perform testing for radon, lead paint and carbon monoxide within the home.

To get the job done faster and more thoroughly than their competitors, HomeTeam never sends an inspector to a job alone. No matter how small the inspection, clients always get at least one master and one supporting inspector. Over the past 20 years, HomeTeam has proven its methods are superior with an impressive track record and a growing base of satisfied customers across the United States.

Franchisee Profile: Michael Henry, franchisee of Bellevue, Ontario

Location: Bellevue, Ontario

Something Interesting About Michael’s Story…
Having had a bad experience with home inspection in the past, Michael was impressed with HomeTeam Inspection Service before he became a franchisee. He appreciates the fact that the HomeTeam inspectors are, as suggested by the name, organized into a team, facilitating quicker yet more thorough inspections. As a HomeTeam franchisee, Michael underwent extensive training and earned a certification as a home inspector in order to become a qualified member of his own home inspection team. He now takes a very active role in his business, personally inspecting homes along with a team of licensed professionals, including a heating and cooling technician.

What Michael Did Before HomeTeam
Prior to becoming a HomeTeam franchisee, Michael worked for 21 years in the printing industry. After a while, he decided he wanted to start his own business and began looking for opportunities to do so. Franchising seemed like the right choice since it offers him the kind of business where he can work out of his home and be his own boss, while having a solid infrastructure upon which to base his business model. These prove to be valuable assets in a down economy.

How Michael Specifically Found Out About HomeTeam
Michael found HomeTeam after researching franchises online. He had experience with bad inspectors in his own home in the past, so he had a good idea of what to look for in an inspection company. The team-based inspections and superb organization of HomeTeam proved an immediate draw.

Why Michael Became and Loves Being a HomeTeam franchisee…
Michael says the best thing about being a HomeTeam franchisee is the great support system HomeTeam has in place to help its franchisees. Corporate frequently calls to help out with the business aspect, while a technical advisor is always one call away to make sure the inspection process is carried out properly. He’s also been able to work with his wife, who helps out on the accounting side of the business, and has a readymade part-time job for his 14-year-old son, once he’s ready to work.

Franchisee Profile: Colin Conroy of Pompano Beach, FL

Location: Pompano Beach, FL

Q: Where are you originally from?
A: I was working for a car-rental agency in Australia where I met my wife. I moved with her to Pompano Beach in Florida and have been there ever since.

Q: How did you learn about HomeTeam? A: After moving to the States, a friend invited me to open a home inspection business with him in Cincinnati. As part of my due diligence, I explored the company’s competitors, one of which was HomeTeam. Initially, I thought the concept involved team-based inspections which made them stand out, as I had always thought of an inspection service as a one man job. I began looking into franchising opportunities and saw they had 10 locations available on the Florida coast where I was already living. Since I was looking for a big business and not just a single franchise, this was perfect.

Q: What are some career milestones for you? Is there anything unique about your business?
A: I’ve been among the top three franchises for HomeTeam all 14 years that I’ve been open, and the number one franchise five times. My locations were the first to reach 2,500 inspections a year and we were also the first to do a $42 million home. I’ve really embraced the “One call does it all” mentality by sending four people on every inspection: a licensed roofing inspector, a licensed termite inspector, a licensed heating and cooling tech and one other, often myself. I also have over 50 specialists I can call on, ranging from sea wall divers to elevator technicians, so I can meet any need a client may have.
